Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: Breakfast (served on a beautiful rooftop terrace!) was sumptuous and nutritious, although, somewhat oddly, tea and coffee were not included, so you had to pay extra or bring your own cup from your room. All the staff greeted me with smiles, and we had lovely chats — I felt truly welcomed and at home. Through the hostel, I arranged private transport to Dashur and Saqqara at a very good price, with an excellent and engaging driver (Ahmed); this was one of the highlights of my trip. The rooms were atmospheric but somewhat run down — some electrical outlets and lights didn’t work. Downtown Cairo is extremely noisy 24/7, but luckily there is a synagogue opposite the hostel, so the street is closed by police for 5–6 hours at night. Still, it’s best to bring earplugs! Cairo House Hostel (listed as “Manzzel” only on Booking.com) was easy to find using the address they provided (20 Adly). It’s located on Kodak Passage, with plants and beautiful lighting.

Negative: There was some noise on certain nights, mainly from other guests. I felt that, despite their politeness and friendliness, the staff may not always have had the authority to deal effectively with problematic guests. I stayed for ten nights, and my room was changed twice: first because the original room did not have a balcony as promised, and the second time because I was away in the desert for two nights. All the rooms were fine, but I would strongly recommend choosing a room with a balcony if you want to experience the atmosphere of Downtown Cairo in the evenings. The Wi-Fi worked about half of the time, but for this price and in this area, fast internet probably can’t be expected.
